Bodyspace Inspiration Josh Englehart Talks With Simplyshredded.com

How did you get started with bodybuilding?

I got into working out for a lot of reasons. Biggest one was the loss of my older brother to Cystic Fibrosis (lung disease) and my best friend Tony. My brother played a huge role in me realizing our blessed we are to have healthy bodies. Even limited to what he can do, not much could stop him. Tony was like a brother to me. We grew up in Ft Wayne, Indiana together. He had a drinking problem from a early age. Reckless lifestyle lead to his death in 2001. His life was a blueprint for me on staying focused and not falling down to peer pressure or taking worthless risks.

Where does your motivation come from?

The Lord first, friends, family and the people who support me here on the internet and out and about in the real world who recognize me from magazines. “Fans” I guess is what they are called ;) Through God I feel I can achieve so much. This is not my career, but I do take it seriously. Friends and family keep me grounded. Through whatever popularity I should gain, I am just “Josh” to them. My fans keep me going through their optimism and kind words. God Bless al of you guys!

What workout routine has worked best for you?

I like the 4-5 day split working two muscle groups at a time. Super-setting is awesome due to the cardio effect you get while lifting. I took this approach when I focused on leaning down more but wanting to maintain some muscle. Diet is sooo crucial when it comes to this so remember, protein needs to be at a good amount!

If you have to pick only 3 exercises, what would they be and why?

  • Deadlifts: Full body workout, raw power
  • Pull-ups: Awesome for the back and you get a good bicep pump
  • Dips:Work the chest and tris, really depends on body position…LOVE IT!

These exercises just really changed my overall physique. I noticed so much more size in a short amount of time incorporating these in to my “routine”. Its a word I don’t like to use but I do recommend these exercises.

What is your diet like?

I follow a reasonably low carb diet when getting ready for shoots or anything else related to work. When putting on size I up the carbs a good amount. Protein is always high. Diet is so touch and go. Its so crucial to whatever your goal is. But there are people who have been doing this for years who are still trying to figure things out.

They say that the pre and post-workout meals are the most vital meals for the day, what do yours consist of?

My pre-workout meal consists of a scoop of whey protein and mostly a banana (I like to keep my stomach very light before I workout). Post workout would be a protein drink with dried cranberries and maybe a few crackers with jelly.

When trying to cut down do you prefer to use HIIT or just normal cardio?

I mix it up. I saw great results this time around with low impact cardio while being on a low carb diet. I maintained good size and lost fat quick!

Its all about making sure your body isnt over exerted and breaks down too much muscle for energy.

What is your supplementation like?

Don’t take too much. If I do its Cellucor. Mostly just a whey protein kind of guy. I do like Cellucor’s M-5 for a intra-workout supplement and the NO-Zero for a preworkout.

Favourite Bodybuilders?

Frank Zane (perfect body as far as symmetry), Kevin Levrone (crazy size and ridiculous triceps), Dexter Jackson (abs are insane!)

Favourite Quote?

“I can do all through He who strengthens me”. Its biblical but a good one!
