How did you get started with bodybuilding?
Up until the age of 21, I never lifted weights and really never had been inside a gym. It really was never my thing. As a teenager, I was always stayed physically active through playing sports like baseball and basketball but I never lifted weights. During my Junior year of college, I went through a bad breakup of a long-term relationship that I was in. At the time, I felt like I would never get over it but in the end it turned into a springboard that catapulted me right into the gym.
As soon as I started training consistently, I started to see results.
I tried to gather as much information as possible through friends, magazines and the internet. I found that the more I learned, the more dramatic my results became. In early 2005, I attended my first bodybuilding show in support of a friend who trained at my local gym. I remember sitting in the audience and thinking to myself “I could do this!”. It was from that point that I decided to compete in bodybuilding.
So what is the bodybuilding training routine that you use to achieve that killer physique?
When an individual first starts lifting, you can pick any basic routine and achieve some pretty decent results to it. The body has an amazing capacity to adapt to different stimuli so the real task is to find a routine that works for you, use it as long as you can and change things up. Not only will this keep you for getting bored with a routine, but it will keep your body guessing. Recently, I have been using a 5 day training split where during that time I am training legs twice per week.
Here is the split:
- Monday – Quads, Hams & Calves (heavy/low rep day)
- Tuesday – Chest & Abs
- Wednesday – OFF
- Thursday – Back, Traps, Shoulders & Abs
- Friday – Triceps & Biceps
- Saturday – Quads, Hams & Calves (light/high rep day)
- Sunday – OFF
My training routines don’t differ too much between my off-season and my contest prep training. One small difference between the two is the amount of drop sets and supersets that I do. I do much more of those type of sets during a contest prep situation. One constant between the two is that I keep cardio in during both scenarios. Some people shy away from cardio during their off- season but for me, cardio keeps me conditioned and allows for nutrient delivery while assisting in recovery.

When trying to cut down do you prefer to use HIIT or just normal cardio?
The overall goal of cardio training is conditioning and caloric burn. The type of cardio a person does is dependent on many different things. How much cardio, the type of cardio, and the intensity that the cardio is performed can vary greatly between individuals. Personally, I like HIIT cardio for both its conditioning and calorie burning properties. Not does it truly enable you to achieve aerobic conditioning (which helps you to have the lung capacity during intense weight training), it really gets a great sweat going!
What is your Diet like?
As a personal choice, I decided not to compete in 2009. During late 2008, I competed in my first WNBF Pro show, got married, left a job I was at for almost 13 years, moved from New York to North Carolina and started a brand new job. With all of that going on, I thought it was wise to not attempt to prepare for a bodybuilding competition and an entire year would provide my with sufficient time to make the improvements I feel are necessary to truly compete as a WNBF Pro. During that time, I slowly increased my calories as I hit sticking points in my quest to gain mass while staying decently lean. I let myself have 1-2 cheat meals per week which really helped to push things along. I topped out at about 4,000 calories per day.
Right now…
I am in the beginning stages of preparing for my 2nd WNBF Pro show so I am currently in a contest dieting phase. I am working with “Da Guru” – Scivation’s own Derek Charlebois. He has guided my through this past off-season and he will be assisting me though the entire run of shows I will compete in this year. We have found that my body responds best of a diet consisting of high protein, low carbohydrates and high to moderate healthy fats.
Here is my daily diet breakdown as of today:
Meal #1
6oz protein
130g of Blueberries
32g Peanut Butter
Meal #2
6oz protein
32g Peanut Butter or 18 Almonds or 3oz Avocado
Broccoli
Meal #3
6oz protein
32g Peanut Butter or 18 Almonds or 3oz Avocado
Broccoli
Meal #4 (Pre-workout)
2 Scoops Scivation Whey
32g Peanut Butter
Meal #5 (Post-Workout)
2 Scoops Scivation Whey
130g Blueberries
40g of Oatmeal
32g Peanut Butter
Meal #6
6oz protein
32g Peanut Butter or 18 Almonds or 3oz Avocado
Broccoli
What is your supplementation like?
It won’t come as a surprise to anyone that I exclusively use Scivation supplements but my allegiance to Scivation goes back a long, long way. I started using Xtend almost 5 years ago and shortly after that I started to familiarize myself with the rest of their product line. I felt like Scivation designed their products with ME in mind as I could use every single product in the Scivation line without questioning quality, effectiveness, and overall value. In 2007, I was approached by Derek Charlebois and I was offered the opportunity to become one of the first Team Scivation Sponsored Athletes. I jumped at the opportunity because not only did I already support and use Scivation products but I could truly endorse something I already believed in. Opportunities like this do not come often for Natural Bodybuilders as many supplement companies do not see value in Natural Bodybuilding organizations or their competitors.
Working at Scivation is a labor of love.
I get the chance day in and day out to shape the future of our company. Scivation was created out of the need for a pure, ethically driven supplement line without deceiving ads or false marketing. Scivation supports Natural Bodybuilding but also supports bodybuilding in general – regardless of organization or sanction. At the end of the day, I know that we are having a positive effect on people’s lives – especially through our Team Scivation program . By offering the opportunity to receive FREE Diet and Training guidance, we are helping people reach their goals – one step at a time. We also have a brother company called Primaforce, which provides basic, high quality supplements at very affordable prices.
Right now I am using the following supplements:
- Scivation Xtend
- Scivation Whey
- Scivation Solution 5 – Chocolate Decadence
- Scivation Essential EFA
- Scivation Vasocharge
- Scivation Sesamin
- Scivation Dialine 4X
- Scivation Knockout
- Primaforce Elastamine
- Primaforce Max CLA
- Primaforce Cissus

Plans for the future?
In 2010 I will compete in more shows that I ever have before during any previous contest season. I will start with the WNBF NE Classic on June 5th and end my 2010 contest year on November 13th at the WNBF Worlds in my hometown of New York City. In between those two shows, I’m sure I will pull the trigger on something else…..so watch out! It will be a challenging year but I am always up for a new challenge.
