Tom Platz Leg Workout – The Man Who Became Famous For His Remarkable Leg Development

He was at his best nearly a quarter of a century ago he finished 3rd in the 1981 MR.O, but no one since has matched Tom Platz’s combination of conscious-altering size and cross-striated definition.

He was legendary for his workout intensity.

He reports that while weighing less then 230 pounds, he squatted eight reps with 635 pounds and 52 reps with 350 pounds. On numerous occasions, he squatted for 10 minutes straight for more than 100 reps with 225 pounds.This might seem like hyperbole, if not the fact that Platz is seen in a video shot in 1992 squatting 495 pounds for 23 reps with his thighs going below parallel.

One cannot deny his genetic predisposition to develop large muscular thighs. But it was Tom Platz’s barn-burning intensity and sheer bravery to train past the limits of his potential that made his thighs legendary.

Platz’s training principle was simple: the harder the better.

Platz enjoyed squatting with 225 pounds for ten minutes straight. That was his style and the reason he created such massive and striated quads. High volume training was a main stay for Platz. Leg curls and leg extensions were performed at 60 rep increments…yes sets of 60, talk about blood flow.

  • Lying Leg Curls 6-10 10-15
  • Standing Calf Raises 3-4 10-15
  • Seated Calf Raises 3-4 10-15
  • Hack Machine Calf Raises 3-4 10-15

I think his secret secret (and yes I did mean to use two secrets, as in the secret behind the secret) is something I like to call steroids, ever heard of those? I mean I give him props because clearly he still has to train hard, and he is intense, but come on. Hypnosis? Please. I give real props to all the naturals out there

  3. I love the video of him squatting 500 lb (posted it on my blog a while back). But I’d have to agree with Rico–Tom’s routine would not be advisable for a natural trainee.

    Look at all the other guys that have done roids though, where are their Platz legs? Roids OBVIOUSLY helped Platz but I bet if he would have been a natural athlete he would have dominated the natural scene as well.

B/+¢h@$$ little boys. You say he was on juice well I say try the workout for your self or shut up and juice these in your mouth.

    Yeah, Platz used steroids. Duh. He still had better legs than any other body builder who used steroids. Plus he went to Wayne State in Michigan, where I’m going! Craziest legs ever.
