How did you get started with bodybuilding?
I played competitive athletics in almost every sport in high school and up to the level of minor league baseball and European league football; I always carried a lot muscle. In 1990 I was just screwing around in the gym when someone came up to me and said I should compete in bodybuilding. Three months later I did my first show and won the overall title.
Where does your motivation come from?
That’s quite an involved question so I’ll try to summarize the high points:
- There is always someone who is working harder so never think that you have reached the peak of training intensity if comparing yourself to others.
- Your brain is your most powerful weapon you have in the gym and outside the gym; always remember that.
- Never take your genetics for granted. Train, diet, and prepare as if you had the worst genetics known to man and you will always end up on top. Humility is key; it keeps you grounded amongst many attributes.
What is your training philosophy?
There is always someone either working harder out there or with better genetics so never take anything for granted.
If you have to pick only 3 exercises, what would they be and why?
- ¾ Deadlifts: Pure mass builder for overall body
- Squats: Do I really need to reiterate why this is one of the best movements ever.
- Lunges: Best overall leg mass builders known; my opinion.

When trying to cut down do you prefer to use HIIT or just normal cardio?
HIIT without a doubt! Why waste time. The sustained neurohormonal effects afterwards far outweigh usual cardio.
What is your philosophy on nutrition?
Clean, pure, just enough carbs to train, set amount of protein, and the right balance of healthy fats.
What are your favorite meals and foods?
Breakfast is definitely my favorite. Wild game and fish, fruits and vegies
Favorite cheat food?
Biscuits and Gravy or Chicken Fried steak
What supplements do you use that give you great results? How do you use them?
- 1 multivitamin/day (Universal or Nutritox Athletic Formula); in am and after workouts
- Krill oil: in am
- BIOTEST® Superfood: after workouts
- L-glutamine: after workouts
- Fiber tabs: before bed
- Vitamin C: with each meal
Favorite Bodybuilders?
Tom Platz; he changed the world of bodybuilding probably more so than anyone of his time. He was honest about what he did to get there, yet, you could not argue about his work ethic in achieving his results. Arguably, the hardest working BB of his time!
