Max “The Body” Philisaire Talks With Simplyshredded.com

How did you get started with bodybuilding?

In High school, I was 6’1, 150lbs eating and sleeping basketball. Upon graduating high school, I made it a mission to put on some muscle. FLEX magazines always stood out when ever I was at the grocery store, so I picked one up. I started following workouts, proper form and diet to a T. Results came quicker than I expected.

What gets you motivated?

My motivation comes from always having to prove to myself that I can be the best Max I can be. That is where maximum development comes from. We can all maximize our potential and be at peace with that.

What is your training philosophy?

My training philosophy is simple because the instruction for getting results are simple. I just do it! I don’t play games when I’m really serious about achieving a goal. If I plan to eat what is on the meal plan, I don’t make excuses, I just make it happen. If I plan to workout 5 times this week, you’ll have to kill me to stop me from doing so. There is no secret to achieving your fitness goals. Stay focus and consistent with the program.

If you have to pick only 3 exercises, what would they be and why?

3 exercises? That is hard for me since I credit at least a hand full of exercises for my results. I will have to go with barbell curls for the mass it added to my biceps. The second is heavy dumbbell press because of the mass and separation it added to my pecs. Last but not least deadlifts because it turned my back into something out of a werewolf movie.

When trying to cut down do you prefer to use HIIT or just normal cardio?

I rarely ever try to cut down. Most of the times I’m adding mass or just maintaining. But I would play basketball at least once a week for cardio. I wouldn’t take my creatine or weight gaining shakes.

What is your philosophy on nutrition?

My philosophy on nutrition is pretty much the same as my philosophy on working out. I don’t play games with a meal plan. It is a mission and in the military, that means life or death. I take exercise and nutrition just as serious. I do my research and find out what will help me maximize my fitness potential. I put together a meal plan and stick to it like nothing else mattered.

What are your favorite meals?

I’m very active with a fast metabolism so I demolish lots of carbs throughout the day. I love pasta dishes. I will pretty much eat fish, chicken breast or steak but it must be grilled or baked. I go through brown rice and potatoes like I have no sense.

The key is balance. I know and understand my needed intake for a maximized physique.

Favorite cheat food?

My stomach is usually full from eating what I’m suppose to, so I don’t usually have the time to cheat. It has gotten to the point where I have to make time to cheat since I don’t make time on my weekly meal plan for it. I love pizza, Ice cream, burger and fries but my tolerance for such food has diminished over the years. I can’t eat as much of it as I would like and I feel sick after wards.

What supplements do you use that give you great results? How do you use them?

My favorite supplement is proper nutrition. That might sound lame to some but results don’t lie. We cannot escape proper diet.

There is no supplement on the market that has been able to do what proper diet does better.

Since I am a hard gainer, I like to use creatine products and weight gaining shakes. By using these two supplements properly, exercising with proper form and following a strict diet, Im able to achieve a physique that many cannot and will not be able to achieve with steroids alone. I use these supplements the way I’m instructed to use them for maximum results. It’s that simple! Read instructions and follow them.

Which era of bodybuilding had superior physiques? Yesterdays Bodybuilders Or Todays?

In my opinion if you look at the past and present you will find superior physiques in both times. One will never out do the other. The past physiques set the pace and the future took it and ran with it. With that said, there will be no other Arnold Schwarzenegger. He was the best at what he did not because he had a superior physique but because he had a mind that demolished any obstacle it had in its way. The work and dedication it takes to be Mr Olympia is rigorous but Arnold was mentally equipped to win the battle inside and outside the gym. I speak of Arnold because he didn’t stop at bodybuilding competitions. He took bodybuilding with him where ever he went. I can’t think of a bodybuilder today that not only has a superior physique but an even more powerful mind. To be the best you have achieve a superior physique and make use of it. We have bodybuilders and then we have icons.

Favorite Bodybuilders?

These two names stick out:

  • Arnold Schwarzenegger
  • Ronnie Coleman
  • Frank Zane

Favorite Quote?

I like the quote from Nike

“Just Do It”

Two of my own quotes:

“Life is rough but we’re equipped with the tools to succeed”
“Maximize your mental, physical potential and celebrate self realization”
