NPC Bodybuilder Matt Hawryliw Talks With Simplyshredded.com

How did you get started?

_MG_3920_LDCSCRUBOBWhen I was fourteen years old, I began weight lifting seriously originally for football. Since I was younger though, I had a fascination with bodybuilding. It was always a dream to look like the guys in the magazines and ads. All throughout high school I was very committed to my training. When I decided to not play football in college, I kept the same commitment I had to the gym throughout college. I started to focus more on the bodybuilding side of things though. I became much more educated about nutrition and supplementation. I also switched my training to more of a bodybuilding type style as well. Being a competitive athlete since I was five, I had a major desire for competition. I went through my freshman year of college without really competing in anything. Due to my extremely competitive nature, I really wanted to compete. The summer after my freshman year of college I decided to compete in my first show, the NPC Pennsylvania Championships. I researched as much as possible and did my own diet for the whole prep. With really little help from anyone, the whole thing was truly a learning experience. I entered my first show that year, at 19 years old and won the teen class in the NPC Pennsylvania Championships. Two weeks after that show, I also won the teen class in the NPC Tri-state Championships and have been hooked ever since.

So what is your training routine like?

I really focus on training very heavy and hard, especially on compound movements. I also do a tremendous amount of volume, and can go up to 27 sets a bodypart in a workout. I have started to end my workout with an FST-7 approach on an exercise for a bodypart, which has really help bring fullness and size in the last year or so.

My current split is:

Monday – Arms/Traps
Tuesday - Legs/abs
Wednesday - off
Thursday- Chest/tris
Friday - Back/Bi/abs
Saturday - Shoulder/traps

When trying to cut down do you prefer to use HIIT or just normal cardio?

I like to use a mix of both when dieting. In the beginning of the diet I will use HIIT a good amount to get the initial fat off. However, when I start to go lower carbs near the end of the diet, I tend to stick to a lower intensity for longer durations to prevent glycogen from being to depleted and resulting in muscle loss.

What is your Diet like?

My diet is pretty constant and pretty much the same everyday, with the occasional cheat meal.

Consists Of:

Meal 1: 12 egg whites 1 whole bagel 2 cups strawberries
Meal 2: 1 cup oats or 2 cups cherrios, 2 scoops Thermolife Vasolate, One scoop Whey isolate
Meal 3: 16 oz steak, 3/4 cup grits precooked
Workout:
PWO shake: 75grams waxy maize starch, 75 grams whey isolate, 10 grams bcaas
Meal 4: 12 egg whites 1 whole bagel 2 cups strawberries
Meal 5: 16 oz chicken 2tbspn pb
Meal 6: 16 oz chicken 2tbspn pb
Meal 7 : Two scoops Thermolife Vasolate, 1 scoop whey isolate

What is your supplementation like?

I am currently with an excellent supplement company, Thermolife International. With their products I make tremendous gains and have helped me reach my goals.

My current supplement stack is:

  • 0626091907Thermolife Vasolate
  • Thermolife C-BOL
  • Thermolife E-BOL
  • I will cycle on and off Thermolife T-BOL every 2 months
  • Whey Isolate
  • Waxy Maize Starch
  • BCAAs
  • Glycerol monsterate
  • USPlabs jacked
  • Controlled Labs Glycergrow
  • Generic Multi-vitamin.

Plans for the future?

I am currently planning on doing the NPC Collegiate Nationals again in July. I may do the NPC PA championships of NPC Philadelphia Championships a few weeks before the Collegiate Nationals as a warm-up show.

Favourite Quote?

I have three that really motivate me: “obsession is what lazy people call dedication” , “Go heavy or go home”, and my favorite from Henry Rollins “The Iron never lies to you. You can walk outside and listen to all kinds of talk, get told that you’re a god or a total bastard. The Iron will always kick you the real deal. The Iron is the great reference point, the all-knowing perspective giver. Always there like a beacon in the pitch black. I have found the Iron to be my greatest friend. It never freaks out on me, never runs. Friends may come and go. But two hundred pounds is always two hundred pounds.”
