Courtney Dukes Talks With Simplyshredded.com About His Amazing Transformation

How did you get started with bodybuilding?

Well I first decided to start lifting weights in 7th grade, because I was afraid I would get picked on and beat up in high school. However I didn’t really get serious until mid way through my freshman year back in 1999. I was always a very skinny kid and had a ridiculously fast metabolism that kept me that way. On top of that I played a lot of cardio intense sports like soccer, tennis, and basketball. I was playing basketball after school one day when a couple of my friends from the football team walked in and they were shirt less. I had never seen physiques like that before and I immediately desired to look like that. I talked with a few of them for a while and they invited me to start working out with them in the future. Immediately following that experience I went to the grocery store and picked up my first issue of FLEX magazine. I began to try and get my hands on as much weight lifting information as I possible could. I started going to the school weight room several times a day and even got weight equipment for my home and the rest was history. My addiction to the iron jungle was official and my life would never be the same again.

Where does your motivation come from?

My motivation comes from several places; from within myself, my family, the people that are inspired by me, the doubters, and those who have already achieved such a high level of physique development that I desire. I believe first off to succeed in bodybuilding you must have strong self motivation, you must be willing to push your body past all the thresholds that would normally make people stop. If you want to transform your body you have to be willing to live differently than the majority of individuals and make the necessary sacrifices. Family is also a very important factor without their support things can become extremely difficult and its always nice to know that the support is there when the times get rough. When I hear stories from people telling me that after seeing my before and after pictures they realize that a change in their life is also possible, it makes me feel great. Many people out there can relate to being really skinny and wanting to make a change, but most of the transformations stories out there also show it from the opposite direction. Overweight people that lose a lot of weight and get into better shape you rarely see skinny people that work just as hard to change from skinny twigs to muscular frames, that’s where I come in. I show them that it is possible and they can achieve it. Now comes the doubters all the people that said to you it can’t be done, the kids in school that made fun of you for trying. All these kinds of people can give you that little extra push needed when your pushing through a grueling workout and are considering stopping just a few reps short. Finally its very important to find some people that have achieved the results you are looking for and gain motivation from the journey and situations. Old school bodybuilding pros are a great source along with the current crop of pro athletes and fitness professionals.

So what is the bodybuilding training routine that you use to achieve that killer physique?

Its funny you should ask that question, because I could sit here and describe exactly what I’m doing now and it may help a few people. However the majority of people would not be at the proper level of training experience to get full benefits from a routine I’m using now or even a few years ago. So instead I’m going to give you something that most others wont or don’t have the ability to offer you. I just started a new section on my site www.time2transform.com that addresses this specific issue. The section is called the Making of a Gymrat and it is going to contain my workout journals, food logs, body stats, and progress pictures from back in 99 when I first began up untill present day. There is a ton of info that I have found looking through my old boxes of junk and I believe this will be invaluable to bodybuilders of all experience levels. You will see the road that got me to this physique and not just the last few miles of the journey, which is what my current routine would basically be at this point.

Some Flexing

When trying to cut down do you prefer to use HIIT or just normal cardio?

Well first off I believe that if you have a really good nutritional plan and stick to it with out deviating not as much cardio is required. When I do preform cardio I usually do 3 20min sessions a week of Intervals on the elliptical machines and that’s it. A lot of this is because as I stated earlier my metabolism is extremely high and I stay lean very easily.

What is your Diet like?

My diet is a basic carb cycling routine where I alternate medium and low carb days throughout the week days and then a high and no carb day on the weekends. My protein sources are usually egg whites, lean ground beef, and of course chicken. I eat fish too, but I have been taking a break from it here lately. My fast digesting carb sources are white rice, potatoes, and fruits. My slower digesting carb sources are oatmeal, brown rice, yams, and vegetables. I find when it comes to diet the simpler you keep it the easier it is to stick to it, therefore my diet is pretty much the same every week with only a few changes.

What is your supplementation like?

For supplementation right now first thing when I wake up I have a shake with a scoop of cellucors nitro-sport protein. I then take a multivitamin with my breakfast meal. Pre workout is cellucors P6 extreme and M5 extreme for a great strength and pumps during my workout. Post workout I again have a shake with cellucors nitro-sport protein along with their R3 extreme. Before bed I take two scoops of Optimum Nutrition casein protein, P6 and R3.

Plans for the future?

The future is still wide open for me,I’m not sure what all it will bring , but I’m excited an ready to face it head on. Maybe I will do more modeling, competing, or just training others and helping them reach their goals. What I do know is that I will continue to learn, adapt, and grow bigger and stronger than I am now. I really plan to put a lot more articles, photos, and general training advice on my website time2transform.com, so that I can continue to inspire others to go for what makes them happy and never settle for a life that don’t want.
